Ashiatsu Massage
Ashiatsu Massage Therapy
Whether you’re an athlete seeking recovery, someone managing chronic pain, or simply looking for unparalleled relaxation, Ashiatsu is a game-changer. Imagine sinking into a state of total relaxation as the weight of the world is quite literally lifted off your shoulders. Ashiatsu massage, often called “barefoot massage,” takes therapeutic bodywork to the next level, offering deep, even pressure that penetrates tight muscles and melts away stress.
Ashiatsu massage is known for its ability to relieve tension, alleviate muscle pain, improve circulation, and promote relaxation. It can be particularly effective for individuals who prefer deep tissue work.
What Makes Ashiatsu Different from Traditional Massage
Ashiatsu originates from the Japanese words “ashi” (foot) and “atsu” (pressure). Basically, instead of using my hands, I use my (super clean) feet to deliver broad, deep pressure to my client’s body. It’s kind of like I’m walking on your back. But don’t worry—it’s not as intimidating as it sounds! I use parallel bars mounted above my massage table for support, ensuring precise control and even weight distribution, and also allowing me to adjust the pressure according to what my clients want.
Ashiatsu massage is perfect for clients who need deeper work without the discomfort sometimes associated with traditional deep-tissue massage techniques.
Even if a client doesn’t need deep work, they can still experience massage therapy that’s very different from what’s done by most other massage therapists in Kalispell because not many massage therapists specialize in Ashiatsu. Having received my training in 2012, I’m a pretty seasoned Ashiatsu therapist.
Because the bars are mounted above my massage table, Ashiatsu is not available for outcall / mobile massage or chair massage. It’s only available in my Kalispell massage studio.

A Little Bit More About Ashiatsu
Broad, Even Pressure:
Unlike traditional deep-tissue massages, where fingers and elbows can create sharp or uncomfortable pressure points, Ashiatsu provides smooth, sweeping strokes. Using my feet I’m able to cover larger surface areas, making the experience both intense and deeply relaxing but without the pain that sometimes comes with deep tissue massage.
Gravity-Assisted Techniques:
By using my body weight, I’m able to deliver consistent, deeper pressure, ideal for addressing tight muscles and connective tissues.
Customizable for Every Body:
Despite its deep nature, Ashiatsu can be adapted to suit various preferences. I adjust my pressure based on what you’re comfortable with, ensuring a comfortable and effective session for everyone—from first-timers to seasoned massage clients. In fact, after discussing my client’s needs, most table sessions in my office end up being about 60% Ashiatsu and 40% hands-type work. I climb all over the table – getting on and off as needed to best address the needs of each client and to make sure they’re getting the most from their massage.
What to Expect From Your First Ashiatsu Session
If you’re new to Ashiatsu, you might have questions about what happens during a session. Here’s how it works:
Initial Consultation:
I begin with a brief conversation to understand your needs, areas of tension, and any medical concerns. This ensures the session is tailored to your unique requirements.
Comfortable Positioning:
You’ll lie on a padded massage table, with bolsters or supports to ensure maximum comfort.
The Technique:
I use the overhead bars for balance and control, applying smooth, gliding strokes with my feet. Expect long, sweeping motions across your back, shoulders, legs, and other areas where you’re experiencing muscle pain or tension. Based on our initial conversation, I might also use my hands.
Relaxation and Focus:
The rhythm of the massage promotes deep relaxation while targeting muscle tension. Many clients describe the experience as a perfect balance between intensity and calm.

Benefits of Ashiatsu
It Relieves Chronic Pain
The deep pressure of Ashiatsu reaches tight muscles and connective tissues, offering relief from conditions like sciatica, lower back pain, and shoulder tension.
Enhances Mobility:
By releasing tension and increasing blood flow, Ashiatsu helps improve joint flexibility and overall mobility, making it ideal for active individuals.
Reduces Stress:
The combination of deep pressure and rhythmic movements activates the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress hormones and promoting relaxation.
Boosts Circulation:
Improved blood flow helps oxygen and nutrients reach tissues more effectively, aiding recovery and overall health.
Promotes Emotional Balance:
Ashiatsu isn’t just a physical experience—it’s a mental one. Many clients report feeling emotionally lighter and more centered after a session.
First Timer FAQ’s
If you’ve never tried Ashiatsu before, it’s natural to have reservations, but rest easy, it’s comfortable and relaxing. Here are some typical questions first-timers ask:
“Will it hurt?”
No. Not at all. Ashiatsu’s broad pressure feels less intense than the pinpoint focus of traditional deep-tissue techniques. Plus, I tailor each session to your comfort level.
“Is it safe?”
Absolutely. I’m a licensed and experienced therapist and I use precise techniques to ensure a safe, effective, and enjoyable session.
“Is it weird to be stepped on?”
Think of it less as “being stepped on” and more as experiencing the beauty of expertly controlled footwork! You’ll quickly forget your initial hesitations soon after we get started.
NOTE: Despite every reasonable effort to warm my feet, including standing on a heating pad near the table to begin the session, my feet, like my hands, can still be a little cold at times.
Thus, if you seek relief from the lower back, glute, hamstring, or quad issues, an Ashiatsu massage is a great solution! Your massage therapy doesn’t have to be the “same ‘ol same ‘ol.” And if, for some reason, you don’t like Ashiatsu, we can always switch to traditional hands-on massage.
