Kinesio Taping to Aid in Recovery & Relief

I had my own experience with Kinesio Taping a couple of years ago when I slipped on the ice in my driveway. A local chiropractor taped my ribs, and I could feel the support and reduced inflammation right away.

An Ultra Affordable Option

Kinesio tape can be included with any session for an additional $20.00. Let me know before we begin if you’d like this option, and I’ll apply it near the end of your session.

IMPORTANT! Preparing for Kinesio Taping

If you’re planning to get taped, make sure the area is clean, free of lotion, and shaved if necessary.  It’s important that the tape interacts with the skin, and not the hair. Yes, guys, if you want your knee taped and you’re rocking a lot of hair, you might want to shave first—unless you enjoy peeling off tape like a medieval torture device.

What is Kinesio Taping and Where Did it Begin?

Kinesio taping was developed in 1973 by Japanese chiropractor Dr. Kenzo Kase. Back in October 2015, I took an online introduction class to Kinesio taping—short for Kinesiology—and got my first look at this fascinating healthcare technique.

It caught my interest enough that I decided to take a full-day, hands-on Kinesio taping course in Kalispell, MT, in September 2016. That deep dive gave me a better understanding of the latest research and how to apply the tape for specific results, like pain relief, reducing bruising and swelling, and even helping scars heal.

What’s the Purpose of Kinesio Taping?

Unlike traditional braces or athletic tape that limit movement, kinesio taping isn’t about restricting muscles or joints. Instead, it helps reduce inflammation, swelling, and edema while promoting lymphatic drainage. It works by lifting the skin away from the underlying muscles, tendons, and ligaments, improving circulation and allowing the body to heal naturally. When applying the tape, I consider factors like tension, stretch, and whether the tape needs to lift or recoil in a specific direction. That’s why having a solid knowledge of anatomy and physiology makes all the difference in achieving the best results.

Kinesio taping provides a non-invasive way to support your body’s natural healing process. Whether you’re dealing with a fresh injury, looking to enhance performance, or managing chronic discomfort, kinesio taping gives your body the extra support it needs to move freely and recover more efficiently.

What to Expect from Your First Taping Session

First, I’ll take a few minutes to assess your concerns, check your movement patterns, and identify the areas that need support. Then, I’ll apply the tape strategically to target specific muscles, joints, or ligaments. The goal is to provide just the right amount of support while keeping you comfortable. Once applied, the tape can be worn for several days, giving you ongoing benefits between sessions.

What’s With All the Different Tape Colors

The color of the tape doesn’t mean anything—it’s just a light, elastic cotton blend that’s water-resistant (there’s a waterproof version too) and can be worn for up to five days.

Who Can Benefit from Kinesio Taping?

You often see runners and athletes wearing colorful tape around shoulders and knees, but this technique isn’t just for athletes—anyone experiencing discomfort or limited mobility can benefit from kinesio taping.

Kinesio Taping Can Help with the Following:

  • Athletes recover from sports-related injuries or improve performance.
  • Office workers alleviate tension caused by repetitive stress or poor posture.
  • Individuals with chronic pain, like arthritis or fibromyalgia, find relief.
  • Those recovering from injuries get extra support for healing muscles and joints.

Pain Relief, Faster Recovery, and Enhanced Performance Through Tape!

One of the best things about kinesio taping is how it provides pain relief without medication. By reducing pressure on sensitive areas and improving circulation, the tape speeds up healing and helps you get back to feeling better. It also supports lymphatic drainage, which decreases swelling in injured or overused areas. Athletes, in particular, benefit from added stability and reduced fatigue, which can help with endurance and performance.

How is Taping Different from Using Braces or Wraps?

Unlike bulky braces or wraps, kinesio tape is lightweight, breathable, and waterproof, making it easy to wear throughout the day without discomfort.

Ready to Give It a Try? If you’re interested in adding kinesio taping to your session, just let me know ahead of time. Be sure the area is clean, dry, free from lotion, and shaved if needed. I may not have been the best with scissors in fifth-grade art class, but when it comes to using them for healthcare, I’ve got it down! Let’s get you taped up and feeling better!
